Sunday Avanti (they/them) is a Black queer, nonbinary artist, librarian, and archivist from Atlanta, Georgia, whose creative journey is intimately intertwined with their surroundings. Their work is a reflection of their heritage, personal experiences, and love for their friends, chosen family, and community.
Sunday’s artistic practice revolves around the portrayal of people and the activities that shape their day-to-day lives. From tending to a garden, having family dinners, or basking in the warmth of a park with loved ones, They explore the nuances and beauty found in these seemingly ordinary moments. By centering their work on themselves, friends, and chosen family, They aim to reclaim and amplify our stories, shining a light on the diverse experiences that exist within our communities.
This past Summer, Sunday achieved a significant milestone by completing their (MLIS) Master’s in Library and Information Science. This year they have also been the recipient of the Walter Dean Myers Grant and the Pippin Properties African American Creatives Grant. In addition to their creative endeavors, Sunday is the visionary behind the Butter Pecan Archive, a digital archive they founded and currently manage. At present, Sunday is deeply engaged in a book project combining their love for illustration and storytelling into a collection of portraits, interviews, and personal narratives.
