Artist Statement
Updated Summer 2023
My creative journey is driven by a deep commitment to uplift and inspire Black queer and trans voices while preserving the narratives of our experiences. Through portraiture and figurative illustrations, I strive to capture the essence of everyday life, showcasing the joy, love, and complexities of existence. Placing a special emphasis on my own experiences as a Black queer person from the South, I weave together stories that celebrate rest, challenge harmful narratives, and reimagine possibilities.

My artistic practice revolves around the portrayal of people and the activities that shape their day-to-day lives. From tending to a garden to finding solace in bed or basking in the warmth of a park with loved ones, I explore the nuances and beauty found in these seemingly ordinary moments. By centering my work on myself, my friends, and my chosen family, I aim to reclaim and amplify our stories, shining a light on the diverse experiences that exist within our communities.

Experimenting with various mediums, I have found my artistic home in gouache and digital illustration. Gouache provides a softness and storybook feel to my work, infusing each piece with a sense of warmth and familiarity. Working digitally offers accessibility, enabling me to create wherever inspiration strikes. This flexibility allows me to explore new dimensions of my artistic expression while maintaining a deep connection to the narratives I seek to preserve.

Preserving my work is an integral part of my artistic process. Through short-format and visual podcast-style videos, I document my creations and share insights into my artistic journey. This approach not only invites viewers to witness the evolution of my work but also creates an opportunity for dialogue and discussion around the themes, inspirations, and techniques that shape my practice.

As an artist impacted by multiple marginalizations, I am acutely aware of the power of intentional storytelling and representation. Every brushstroke becomes an act of reclamation, celebrating the beauty and strength of my identity. I invite viewers to immerse themselves in my work and reconnect with cherished memories. My ultimate goal is to foster empathy, understanding, and a sense of belonging. Through my art, I encourage the exploration of diverse experiences, uplift and empower marginalized voices, and envision a future where all Black queer and trans narratives are celebrated and respected.
