Painting Yuno - Behind the Scences | A Proud Moment

Hello friends! I'm thrilled to give you a peek into my latest artistic adventure. If you caught my recent YouTube video, you already know I embarked on the exciting journey of painting singer-songwriter Yuno. In this blog post, I'll guide you through the highlights of my creative process, letting you in on the magic that went into this piece. The spark for this project came from my deep admiration for Yuno's music. Have you ever felt that connection with an artist's work? That's precisely what fueled my inspiration for this portrait.

I started the painting using a wash of my favorite Opera Rose watercolor by Daniel Smith followed by an underpainting to preserve certain areas of the portrait. A bright hot pink underpainting for a portrait is definitely not traditional, but I'm not a "traditional" painter, and the color adds such a warmth to the final piece and an overall uniqueness to my illustrative portrait style that I'm working toward. For the rest of the painting, I worked in gouache, building up layers working from thin to thick.

Yuno's freeform locs became the heart of the piece, and I wanted to be extra intentional when painting them. I used violet and ultramarine blue as a base and built up the layers and texture using a mix of burnt umber and Havana brown paint, and neon pink colored pencil.

Choosing the background color was an adventure. I started with a little dried-up dollop of turquoise green by Holbein that had been sitting on my palette for months. halfway through painting the background, I realized I didn't have enough paint so I had to water it down in some areas. And let's say it was a stylistic choice. They painting process is fluid.

Painting the highlights was magical. It's the moment when a few brushstrokes breathe life into the portrait. The way a few well-placed highlights can transform the entire piece never ceases to amaze me.

Painting Yuno was an absolute joy, and I'm eager to embark on more journeys like this. Your support means the world to me, and I can't wait to have you alongside me for future artistic adventures. What artists or subjects would you like to see me tackle next?

Thank you for joining me on this behind-the-scenes adventure. Until next time, keep creating!
